Viktor Korchnoi was born in 1931 in Leningrad. He started playing chess relatively late at the age of 13. Proving his talent he became a Grandmaster in 1956. He is a four times USSR champion, who played in the USSR olympic team winning the gold medal six times. He became world champion candidate eight times, and played finals against Karpov twice. In 1976 he emigrated into Switzerland, becoming a swiss citizen in 1991. In Baguio 1978 he was very close beating Karpov on their World Championship match. He has been competing among the best for 40 years!
